In last week’s Swiss Chess Championship, Infyni’s chess student Sai Pranav Kalla walked away with the first prize. The tournament, held by the North Texas Chess Academy in Dec 2023, saw 9-year-old Kalla play four consecutive rounds against opponents young and old. 

Kalla has been taking intensive chess classes with Infyny’s Chess Master Sandeep Gupta for about 2 years. 

“I used to coach him when he was very young,” said Kalla’s father Mr. Sankar Kalla who is himself a chess maverick. “But I felt the need for a professional to coach my son.” 

Infyni conducts live training in chess for kids as young as 5 years old. These classes taken twice a week trains students live in strategic moves and tactics. 

“You can see a difference in their games as early as 3 months,” says Instructor Gupta. 

Infyni’s classes include assignments, and matches held frequently between teams, internally. Kalla will now be playing with senior students from Chess for Advanced Players.

So far it has been a busy October at Infyni. Soon after the Dussehra celebrations we launched a 1-1 Live Piano course for beginner kids. This exclusive class is taken live by self-taught musician and choreographer James Digal who also plays the guitar, Bass guitar and Ukelele.

We also started Chess for 5-year olds. A live class from Chess maverick Varsha Venkatesh who is exceptionally good at keeping the kids engrossed in their game. Asked why chess classes were fun, kids say “because we get to play against the teacher 1-1 and she doesnt hurry when the time is over.”

Rohit Maiya: From Fat to Fit and Inspiring the Future

Not so long ago, Rohit Maiya was hardly a shadow of what he is today. Thanks to perseverance and a bit of grit to face adversity head-on, he successfully shed weight and got fit. In the process, he discovered a passion for running.

Maiya shares his personal story here. Rohit Maiya is associated with Infyni in more than one way. As an SAT trainer, he coaches Infyni’s students to ace the SAT/ACT preparatory tests.

His Classes Are Different

“Make your classes fun and engaging, and you can encourage any young adult to develop a passion for academics,” Maiya says. The foundational courses Maiya teaches cover the fundamentals in Math and English. These are the cornerstones for a successful future in any career.

Maiya coaches kids as young as 8 years old, but the approach is different for that age group. It’s more like an interactive discussion around algebra, gradually scaling up to equations and calculations.

It Was Only a Matter of How

When Infyni learned about Maiya’s training for the Ladakh Marathon, it was already late summer. We realized this was a great opportunity to support a member of the Infyni family. Maiya was set to leave his home in two days for the base camp to acclimatize to the altitude. For Infyni, it was only a matter of how.

Our promotional material was shipped in two days from our office in Gurgaon to Bangalore. Time and again, it’s clear that determination is what helps one go the extra mile. Despite fighting a fever and infection, Maiya successfully completed both marathons in record time.

The pandemic was a reminder of the need for conscious, healthy living. While many of us were initiated into an active lifestyle post-Covid to improve energy levels or immunity, people like Maiya leveraged the opportunities that isolation brought.

He talks about watching endless hours of motivational videos, talks, and webinars on nutrition. He also shares how fasting improved his metabolism and the value of ancestral grains and millets in his journey to fitness. Today, Maiya tries to share his story with those who feel overwhelmed by the effort required to get healthy and fit.

Maiya was heading to Ladakh to do his first midnight marathon, the Rezangla Full Moon Marathon that’s starts from the banks of Pangong Lake at Merak village and finishing at the Rezang La war memorial. 

Forty two km long, it is held in honour of the soldiers who lost their lives in the 1962 war. Maiya was expecting inclement weather conditions in Leh. But more challenging was the terrain. “There was no road or path on the last 12-km stretch,” describes Maiya, “you need special shoes for that terrain which I didn’t have.” 

Temperatures dip further at night and when one breathes in such cold air, it slows you down. 

“It felt better to wear a bandana covering my nose and mouth but that made the intake of oxygen even poorer,” he spoke from Ladakh the morning after. “So I was running with a severe headache,” says Maiya.

Typically oxygen levels are 50% at such altitudes, near Pangong Lake which is why tourists and trekkers are now mandatorily required by the Directorate of Tourism to acclimatize for 48 hours. Acute Mountain Sickness can make you dizzy, nauseated and make you feel so out of breath it can precipitate a panic attack, say seasoned bikers. 

Ladakh is not for a short vacation, warns Maiya. Go well planned, drink lots of water and be respectful towards nature. 

After completing 30-km, having no road to run on must have been really hard, that too in pitch darkness. “It was indeed my toughest Full Marathon, so far,” admits Maiya. 

“It forces you to wonder about those who defend our country at such inhospitable conditions, day in and day out,” reminisces Maiya. The mighty mountains are a force to reckon with.

Rohit Maiya Prepares for the Ladakh Marathon

After his successful Last Run across Pangong Lake, Infyni's trainer Rohit Maiya is getting ready for the Ladakh Marathon. At a height of 5,370 meters, the Ladakh Marathon is not just the highest but also the toughest.

"It truly tests the limits of human endurance," says Maiya as he prepares from his home base in Bangalore. With less than two days left for him to pack for Ladakh, he sat with Infyni's writer Anjana Das to share his views on the skills that have helped him survive life's challenges.

This year's Ladakh Marathon kicks off on September 10, 2023, but participants are required to reach two weeks in advance to acclimatize to the thin air at 11,500 feet altitude. The practice is rigorous, but then so is the 42-kilometer run.

Maiya is no stranger to long hours of workouts, counting up to 20,000 skips a day. However, what sets marathon runners apart is their consistency.

"Day in and day out, come rain or shine," chips in Maiya, "you have to be at it."

A typical day for Maiya begins at 4 a.m. with Pranayama (breathing exercises) and starting his run at 4:30 a.m. for more than an hour. After a short break, he continues with Taekwondo classes and follows it up with a 5-kilometer walk with his mother.

Upon returning, he starts his live and online SAT coaching classes for Infyni students. As a veteran, Maiya trains kids in the US as young as 12 years old to take the preparatory tests, some of whom have gone on to score high on the SAT.

"Like running," Maiya says in his soft-spoken manner, "approach any goal in life, be it a skill you are pursuing or a score you are aiming for, with single-minded determination."

Infyni is always committed to finding new ways to engage with the community. Being able to support trainers and mentors in their personal journey is a matter of pride for Infyni. When it serves a cause, it becomes a mission of responsibility.

One of infyni's youngest chess student, Vyas won the second place at the Shrine Chess Tournament held at Detroit on June 2, 2023. Out of 6 games played, he won 5 games. The last one was a draw, bringing his score to 5.5. Vyas is currently enrolled in infyni's Chess Mastery Level Batch for Kids. Under the training of instructor Sandeep Gupta for close to 2 years, Vyas has won almost every Chess championship he has taken part in. "He is an exceptionally bright player," commented trainer Gupta. 

infyni offers live online chess tutoring for chess at all levels from Beginner to advanced. These classes are offered 1-1 or in small groups of 5-6 students so that each child is given individual attention. "Children pick up skills very fast," says Dwisain Suthar, academic moderator for the particular course, "Vyas pays keen attention to all the moves the instructor makes." Courses in Artificial Intelligence are very popular currently with parents requesting for short workshops that they can get kids enrolled in for summer. In this live online workshop, kids learn about Artificial Intelligence in a fun and exciting way. As a 3-hour workshop they learn the many uses of AI & how it can be used to create an app that recognizes emotions. 

Along with AI, Python is another short summer program that is forever in demand among summer workshops for kids. Basic Python programming is covered in school but this summer workshop is a project-based, hands-on course taken by expert instructors from the industry. Live and online, the training allows them to interact with peers, clarify challenges and practice along with the trainer.

Infyni is proud to announce that our long time learner Parv Kale went on to secure the III place in Robotics at Utah state Science Fair, concluded this weekend. Parv was all praise for his instructor Vigneshwaran who has been coaching him. Parv has been taking coding classes with Infyni from 2020 and has completed various levels.

“My coding classes with coach Vigneshwaran helped a lot,” remarked the 14-year old. “Its all thanks to infyni.” 

“Parv specifically requested for 1-1 coaching with infyni as he wanted specific topics covered,” says Rashmee Kale, his mother, “next level he hopes to be trained in Python.” Students find infyni’s coding and web development classes remarkably useful for school projects.
