For Shitij
Kapur, president and principal of King’s College London its exciting times for building
partnerships in India. Speaking to Business Standard on a visit to India, Kapur
was referring to the recent changes the Indian government was making in
University education.
Earlier
in April 2022, the University Grants Commission (UGC) began approving academic
collaboration between Indian and foreign colleges that allows three different
types of degree programmes — dual, joint and twinning degree programmes — to
students from India and abroad. It’s the first time such dual degrees are being
allowed.
Students
who complete the programme will have a degree jointly awarded by the Indian
higher educational institution and the collaborating foreign institution.
The eligibility
criteria requires that the
Indian college must have a minimum National Assessment and Accreditation
Council (NAAC) score of 3.01 or figure in the top 100 in the university
category of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) or in the top
1000 of Times Higher Education or QS World University ranking. While the foreign
universities should be in the top 1000 of Times Higher Education or QS World
University ranking to be eligible to collaborate with Indian educational
institutions.
Kapur believes such dual
degrees are an attractive proposition. The world increasingly needs people who
belong to more than one discipline, he was quoted as saying.
